  • Why does everyone think Bright Eyes did this song first...come on people research

  • Yeah, I don't know. Maybe because it's the most "popular" version of the song? *shrugs*

  • Daniel Johnston did this song originally, i do prefer Lucca`s cover over bright eyes, but both are still really good!

  • Tony Lucca is my favorite musician. This performance is so awesome because I know that he is drunk and just feeling the music so hard that he falls and busts his ass! The best part is that he gets right back up and brings it on home!

  • he's still alive, its just the name.

  • Oh I didn't mean someone covered it before Bright Eyes, I meant a lot of people think that this is Bright Eyes song originally. And I didn't know Daniel Johnston died...I think hes touring in the mid west as we speak.

  • "Just because his version sounds identical to theirs doesn't mean he's covering their version."

Actually, it does. Unless Bright Eyes covered Tony's version.

  • Because it's true? Bright Eyes' version was the one on The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered. I did the research and can't find any evidence of Lucca doing it earlier than that. Can you please point to it?

  • Thank you for your contribution. Maybe we can just put this whole issue to bed and just enjoy the song :)

  • Jeff Buckley covered John Cale's version of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. That ended up being one of his most popular songs. It isn't copying its covering. It is the same thing here. He covered bright eye's version of "Devil Town" by Daniel Johnston.

  • Just because his version sounds identical to theirs doesn't mean he's covering their version. This performance was very Tony, especially when it comes to his friends singing backup for him.

  • I never said that it wasn't originally Daniel's. BUT daniel's doesn't have any music in it. The Bright Eyes version added the music, the sweet solo, the woman vocalist at the end. This guy didn't cover Daniel's version, he covered Bright Eyes'. It's damn near identical.
