Oh, by the way -- there are straight-line storm systems like that in the Midwest: they're called "derechos" (Spanish for "straight lines"). Actually, they typically have a bow-echo pattern. There may be very severe thunderstorms and/or hailstorms therein; there may even be embedded tornadoes! ALL derechos, however, are extremely dangerous; and can do a lot of damage.
