Honjo Oiwake (本荘追分)

My shamisen teacher, Kuroki sensei, playing Honjo Oikwke. He said it usually takes about a year to learn this song! This song uses honchoushi (本調子) tuning, and is played in D.

I know we're on different pages most of the time, but this is IMO plain ridiculous. There's a big difference in learning "a kind of tune" in a couple of hours, and "mastering" a min'yo. (your words) There's nothing sarcastic about that, I'm dead serious. Playing Honjo Oiwake in an ensemble is difficult, no surprise that they hold an annual contest where only the best come through. Anyone can mix up a min'yo with some kokyuhibiki. But playing for an experienced audience, you'll fail.

With all due respect... but this is a real ignorant comment from someone who professes to be a teacher. A day or two to *master* this min'yo? I guess all your students will be enlisting in the next annual Honjo Oiwake competition...? Even the simplest min'yo (e.g. Soran Bushi) can be "learned" in one day, but to play it appropriately takes a lot of practice...
