Jeu by Darius Milhaud from Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, Op 157b, Movement 3, Vif.
Playing this duet from memory are James (clarinet) and Justin (violin), twins aged 13.

"Jeu" (French for play), is a boisterous folk dance based on a hearty and relentless rhythm. Featuring the clarinet and violin, the movement is an exercise in caricature; on the one hand, the violin happily juxtaposes with gritty foreground fiddling (complete with squealing attacks and intonational inflections) against the clarinet's secondary line; on the other, one hears folksy strumming behind the clarinet's lead melody. - Source: http://www.classicalarchives.com

Darius Milhaud (pronounced "mi-yo") 4 September 1892 - 22 June 1974 was a French composer and teacher. He was a member of Les Six—also known as The Group of Six—and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His compositions are influenced by jazz and make use of polytonality (music in more than one key at once).

On a trip to the United States in 1922, Darius Milhaud heard "authentic" jazz for the first time, on the streets of Harlem, which left a great impact on his musical outlook

Legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck arguably became Milhaud's most famous student. Dave Brubeck said, "Milhaud was an enormously gifted classical composer and teacher who loved jazz and incorporated it into his work." - Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_Milhaud

Performed at a fabulous free public concert featuring students and friends of Mark & Jo Walton at the historic St Phillips Church in York Street, Sydney, Australia on 4th November 2011.

Thank you Mark and Jo Walton for organising and presenting such a wonderful event http://www.markwalton.com.au

James is playing a Selmer Signature Bb clarinet (Selmer Paris) with a Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece - profile 88, a Rovner Platinum clarinet ligature and a Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic clarinet reed - number 4 strength.

Justin is playing a "Gliga Vasile Professional" violin (called "Gliga Gama 1" in USA) using a Coda Bow "Diamond GX" violin bow. The violin is equipped with a Pirastro Wondertone Gold E string and Dominant A, D & G strings.

Special thanks to Huw Jones, Lay Minister and Director of Music at St Phillips Church, a fine Oboist who has worked in some of the world's best orchestras, for making this concert possible. http://www.yorkstreetanglican.com
