"I don't believe that blood is thicker than the waters of baptism", says Randall Giles, who has been serving since 2000 in the Church of South India's (CSI) Diocese of Chennai (formerly Madras) in southern India. Randy has a Ph.D. in music composition and history from the University of California, San Diego. While working to improve the quality of music in worship, Randy is also looking to find a form of Christian music that will integrate well with the folk music style already present in rural Indian society. While engaged on this musical quest, he stumbles across the "Matama", temple prostitutes, victims of a sinister practise of female sexual exploitation linked to some of the local belief systems.
This documentary is part of a double DVD set called "Windows on Mission" which includes 11 other documentary films about missionaries working around the world today - a unique insight into the face of global Christianity in the 21st century. A compelling video that not only shows the incorporation of traditional Indian musical aesthetics into Christian worship, but helps explain a system of social hierarchy that few of us in the West understand! It is very interesting that the most progressive liturgical musical developments are taking place in congregations comprised of the most ostracized faithful. Very moving.
