Üsküdar'a gider iken aldı da bir yağmur,
Kâtibimin setresi uzun eteği çamur.
Kâtip uykudan uyanmış gözleri mahmur.

Kâtip benim ben kâtibin el ne karışır,
Kâtibime kolalı da gömlek ne güzel yaraşır.

Üsküdar'a gider iken bir mendil buldum,
Mendilimin içine de lokum doldurdum.
Kâtibimi arar iken yanımda buldum.

Kâtip benim ben kâtibin el ne karışır,
Kâtibime kolalı da gömlek ne güzel yaraşır.

İstanbul, Nuri Halil Poyraz-Muzaffer Sarısözen

I- Üsküdar'a Gider İken Aldı Da Bir Yağmur,

While I went to Üsküdar, it was going to rain
My secretary has a long coat with mud-stained edges
This secretary is going to awake and he is eyes red

This secretary is mine and I belong to him, does it interest people?
For more, how does this starched shirt wear him well.

III- Üsküdar'a Gider İken Bir Mendil Buldum,

Going to Üsküdar, I found a handkerchief
In this handkerchief I put some Turkish delights
Looking for my secretary, I found him near me.

  • @frenchiecocorico1 Thanks for the translations. ;)

  • @TURKKNCL Now I know you speak english too. It will be better to communicate with you because I don't speak a word of Turkish.

The french translation is due to François Charbonnier a researcher and a high french specialist in Islamic musics. I adapated personnaly the english translation on the french one.

As you know I like very much the french singer from sefardic origin Françoise Atlan whose voice is very clear and delicate. This allows me to discover new musical culture. Best regards.

  • @frenchiecocorico1 However, thanks. I'll put them to describtion. I like Françoise Atlan, too, particularly this performance of hers. She sings it almost accentless.

    tbarkelah 3like , je t'adore Françoise Atlan .

  • In Hungary, we studied this in elementary school.

I still remember the first two lines of translation:

"Üzgüdárba ment az írnok, ment lakodalmára

Lóhalálban elő a szamárral, fölkap a hátára... :)"

    Nice diggin' it up. Greetings!
