I found the 2.1 TD in the XM hatch with full leather and electrics is underpowered in a car with a kerb weight of 1.7 tons. Only problem I had was bodges by previous owner who stripped the timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt and in the end it was easier to remove engine and box to replace belt, waterpump and seals. car itself was faultless and averaged 44mpg on a run. In a sea of anonamous rep-mobiles and Euro boxes, it stood out in a carpark and turned heads due to it's Gallic weirdness.

The 2.1TD is possible with a manual gearbox and an automatic gearbox. The 2.5TD is only with a manual gearbox. That's because the automatic gearboxes from the XM can't deal with the torque of the 2.5 turbo diesel so they will break down...

I'd rather have the 2,5 than my 2,1. I'm not so fond of automatic gearbox. 2,1TD Series 2 doesn't excist with manuall gearbox what I know. :(
Yeah, that’s why I changed it with 3.0 24V :-) I don’t like diesel engines much ... it became way better and smooth and capable of going 200kph for hours ... you can check how it sounds on some of my other videos ...
