Chelsea did actually finish 4th before abramovich. It happened with a 2-1 win against Liverpool thanks to a jesper gronkjaer goal in 2002/03. Then a month later abramovich joined.

@89lard Chelsea also finished 4th the season of this match 1997/1998 and 3rd the following year in 1998/1999 (which for my money is the best ever season of The Premiership - a genuine 3 horse race for the title which went right down to the wire!)

@noddydancer It was the European Cup Winners Cup 97/98 Semi-Final 2nd Leg. Vicenza won the first leg 1-0 at home and were 1-0 up at Stamford Bridge meaning Chelsea had to score 3 to make the final. This goal from Hughes in the last 10-15 mins made it 3-1 Chelsea and 3-2 on aggregate taking Chelsea to the final where they beat Stuttgart 1-0 thanks to a Zola goal 20 seconds after coming on as a sub!
