This video was produced by Deutsche Welle in Cooperation with the German Information Center. It recounts the events that led up to the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 9, 1989 and German reunification on October 3, 1990.

Twenty years ago, on November 9, 1989, the world watched in amazement as jubilant crowds gathered on both sides of the Berlin Wall around midnight to celebrate the opening of the border crossings between the eastern and western parts of the city. A peaceful revolution in East Germany had finally cracked this grim symbol of Cold War and political oppression. It signaled the beginning of the end of Germanys postwar division and national unity came less than a year later on October 3, 1990.

  • @georgie2998 Sounds like the Amis! Most likely the CIA in league with KGB. Gorbi did a wonderful job by having Soviet troops stand down and not interfere. Honecker tried to order the Stasi troops to shoot the demonstrators in Leipzig, but calmer heads prevailed and the Stasi commander told his troops not to interfere unless it got violent. This prompted the SED and the DDR regime to sack the hard-liner Honecker and make way for reforms.

  • I was there when the Wall fell! Not since V-E Day has the world seen such a celebration! The biggest party in history! (The "hangover" came later-that's a different story). I remember talking to a Grepo (Border Guard) officer and asked if he thinks the government in DDR will reform...his reply? "That's their problem ...not mine." The reunification ceremony was heart-wrenching, also.

  • As we just learned from declassified Russian documents, our "trusted friend and ally" (puke!) the United States of America, were backing our reunification IN PUBLIC. But behind the scenes, they desperately tried to get the former Soviet Union on their side. Soviet tanks were supposed to rush down any freedom march in Leipzig and elsewhere. In fact, the USA were eager to keep the iron curtain closed and my country divided FOREVER. Thank Gorbachev, it came as we today know. Shame on Ameriturds.

  • Germany happy united ,, but in 1991 they supported separatist states inside Yugoslavia ...

WHat was that all about. And German army in Serbia again in Kosovo.

I guess people learn nothing from history they just change topics but repeat misstakes.

  • Germany is not never unity. The East Germans are always citizens of 2th category. The zest of the fall of Berlin Wall for many E.Germans is ironic

  • @eugen113 yes. yes it does. xD haha. this gave me goosebumps watching it.. i wish i was alive back then. =/

  • I'm so happy that I was alive and I knew what was going on during this moment in history.I may have only been 10 year's old when this happened. But, I truly remember the DDR and the Warsaw Pact. God Bless the great year of 1989. Do have to admit that I miss the old day's a little bit.

  • So it was for the German people.

The world changerd forever - for the freedom loving people of the East Europe.

So it was an historic change for the Albanian nation as well.

Albanians were devided with barbed wire half in Albania and half in yugosllav military ocupation.

Today our nation is free also because the fall of the Berlin Wall.

MISTER PRESIDENT UNITE ALBANIA AND KOSOVA AND THE REST OF THE NATION IN THE FASHIST GOVERNMENT OF FYROM {macedon} AND MONTENEGRO.
