Obama And World Leaders Meet With Gadaffi At The G8 Summit In L'Aquila Italy July 9, 2009

US President Barack Obama caused a stir on Thursday, with a historic handshake with Libyan leader, Colonel Moammar Gadhafi.

Before a Group of Eight (G8) dinner on Thursday night in L'Aquila, Italy, leaders gathered for what's known in diplo-speak as a "family photo."

Several of the leaders mingled and chatted while they took their places, creating occasion for the notable moment of the evening: a handshake between Obama and Colonel Gadhafi.

Once an international pariah, the man former US President Reagan once called the "mad dog of the Middle East" has rehabilitated himself in recent years.

Gadhafi's decision to hand over two Libyan suspects of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, pay billions of dollars in compensation and renounce his weapons of mass destruction programme paved the way for lifting US sanctions on Libya.

Earlier this year, Gadhafi was elected to head the African Union.

In April, Obama shook hands with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at a Latin America summit, earning criticism from Republicans for being cozy with a leader hostile to the US.

Meanwhile, during the second day of the G8 summit on Thursday, Brazil's foreign minister agreed with Obama's call that more aid and support must be given to developing countries to help battle climate change.

Obama said on Thursday that the world's industrialised countries are looking to provide "significant financial resources" to the developing world to help them combat global warming.

The request will be put to a September meeting of the world's 20 major economies to take up the issue, Obama said.

Celso Amorim, Brazilian Foreign Minister, agreed with Obama's position but said that the US could also do "do more than it has done so far".

Amorim said efforts to curb greenhouse emissions needed to be increased across the world, but world leaders must recognise there are "differences" between high and low emitting countries across the developed and developing world.

"There are countries that have been responsible for the stock already existing of CO2 in the atmosphere and you cannot ignore that totally," Amorim said.
The Group of Eight nations - Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States, met on Thursday in as part of a 17-nation group called the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which has become the G-8's main forum for climate issues.

@Andiimnetz Yes, in the cave of the hyena, the American people give the FBI evertything they ever wanted to know and far more voluntarily. The government did not need to pass some draconian post-9/11 law for all this, the people ran to it. Brilliant on FBIbook's part, since it is public and not illegal for them to do it. The US put Gadhaffi in power and then took him out when he said he didn't want to play with their monopoly money but was going to create a currency for all of Africa. The US put the NTC Al-Qaeda in power because Al-Qaeda is part of their (cia) network and can be bribed into selling oil to the US instead of Russia or China.
