Join Master Beekeeper Erin MacGregor-Forbes as she installs a local northern raised over wintered nucleus honey bee colony in the spring of 2010 in southern Maine. Erin also describes the benefit of working with local over wintered northern raised nucs instead of package bees and nucs with a queen recently introduced to them.

  • thanks for all the uploads. I live in NJ and have 1 hive this year being my first. I looked today and there were about 30 dead bees at the bottom. Will they survive the winter?

  • @manvilletrain It depends? The key is the size of the remaining cluster and how much honey they have left. In my area at this time of year we like a watermelon sized cluster and at least 10 deep frames of honey and a few frames of pollen in the hive. They may loose a few thousand bees over the winter and still have plenty of cluster size to stay warm.

  • @evolvingfruit They are mongrels! A mix of carniolan, russian and italian. We have some queens of each race and some that are a mix of all 3. The key is they survived a Maine winter before installation last spring.

  • @redbrookhoney cool. The size is pretty large and there's about 10 full frames. So I just hope for a good winter for the bees.Thank you.
