Wing Commander 'the game' is actually a movie. It has real actor acting in a movie disguised as an ingame video. If all the ingame video stitched together it will form like 1 episode of a sci-fi series...
However the game itself aren't soo good. Later space-sim is better at telling stories ingame than Wing Commander. When compared to those space-sim, WC is like point and click + video of ship flyby & people screaming/talking.
WC movie (above) is a proper movie.

I Definitely would have put Jake Busey....hang on, I just realised it's gary's kid! Anycase, him as maniac. Don't know about blair. And then there's the hairless kilrathi (or my tv was too small) and the changing of nationalities of angel and paladin. WHY why why??!

Honestly, the only major flaw of the movie was having Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard as the leads. The rest of the movie was alright.
