I found these fish feeding on the edge of the kelp in about 70' of water.
I quickly positioned myself on the outside edge of the school and released a angry 8" pacific mackerel.

The mack made it about 20' from the boat before he was inhaled by this 21.lb yellowtail in about 80' of water.

With the chest cam I can get the video rolling within the first 20-30sec of hooking the fish so your not missing much, except the days/weeks spent searching for them. The combination of realitivly heavy gear/line (this reel was set at 12.lbs at strike, 18.lbs full) and kelp really tired these fish out fast!

Rod : Seeker A 665H 20-50 6.5'
Reel : Shimano TLD 15
Line : #65 Jerry Brown Spectra to a 2' #40 Seaguar flouro leader
Hook : Owner 2/0 Ringed Gorilla Circle Hook

Thanks to Hobie and Spectra, without them, my life would suck!!!

  • great job Jeremiah!! when was it, Friday?

The video is from a while ago, but after watching it again I can tell you i was seconds away from disaster when I had this fish at color. Notice how I tighten the drag to bring the fish within gaff range, then never back it off before I reach for the gaff. If that fish where to take off on that one last run like YT like to do, while I have one hand on a rod with tight drag and the other on the gaff there is a good chance I could have lost the fish, the fish and rod or tipped.

  • Ya... as a matter of fact I did notice you tighten the drag, but I had no idea that it was buttoned down. Im going to cedros next month for 3 days, hope to pull on some big bass and a few yellows.
