3D reconstructed dendritic spines of a Golgi-impregnated pyramidal cell. The image was acquired from a stack of 300 um thick Golgi-impregnated section (Z step: 1 um) using a Zeiss Axioplan 2 microscopy (100x oil). The current image is one out of the 12 grids that contain the entire morphology of the neuron.

Instead of using confocal microscopy, this is one of the first 3D reconstruction of dendritic spines from a "thick" Golgi-stained section. Axial resolution of the current image appears very transparent, which warrants the automation of dendritic and spine analysis!!
