This is a video to demo my Laser Harp with me playing Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene 7.

The harp work's by the more retro technique of using 9 Light Dependent Resistors fitted into an overhead cross bar. The beams are created using a single axis galvo scanner being driven be a laptop and 9 patch leads are used to select the note's for each beam on the control desk.

This video was only made possible with help from three other people who all went out of there way to help.
1st. Thanks to Rob Stanley (aka Stanwax) for the loan of the 500mW laser that is fitted within the harp, for his help sorting out the little glitches, providing the laser show for the video and his great editing skills of this video.
2nd. Through contact by Rob a Special thanks to Olly Suckling at the O2 Academy in Liverpool for getting permission for us to use the stage in the main room and for setting us up with any and all lighting needs and fog while filming.
And thirdly to Kev Thorne for taking charge of the hand held camera. Rob mentioned he had pass filming experience.

One last thank you go's to Jean Michel Jarre for his kind permission to allow his fans to upload videos of covers of his excellent musical works.

You can now find more of my JMJ covers on Sound Cloud. Link below.

  • hi carl just found your upload on here looks alot better on stage than in my living room when you came over to show me your lazer harp hope you still going to the concerts. bryan s

  • @iNomx

Hi Bryen. Thanks for your comment. Yes the stage is a much better setting for the harp than anyone's living room.

I have just upgraded to a frame less harp.

I went to both of Jarre s world tour gigs at the MEN. I think it's going to be some time before he returns to the UK again.

Good to hear from you again

    Carl

  • Great cover....

Like you, I am not creatively gifted, and I do a lot of Jean Michel Covers... he's my inspiration, his music is very addictive, and a pleasure to perform...

Don't listen to those who knock you, anyone who knows how Jean Michel thinks will know it is personal interpretation of his music, it is universal, and even he plays his tracks differently... that's what makes his music unique.. Keep it up bud,and by the way,How much was the laser harp?....

  • @Jarrehead

Thanks for the kind comment and yes these are just my interpretations of Jean Michel's music but I do like to keep as close as possible to the main melody. I do like to try and change the overall sound a bit and create a new feel to the covers, not try to create an exact copy of the original.

Keep your eye open for more of my covers of JMJ tracks.

The harp in the video cost about £150 to build but is soon to be replaced by a frame-less version costing about £400 to build.

  • @cdbvideo

What are you plans for the framed version?... I could be tempted to part with some hard earnt ..... :0)

  • @Jarrehead

Unfortunately I have used most of the main parts in the new harp. The only parts left over are the cross bar with the sensors and some electronic bits. The laser, scanner and power supplies are in the new harp.

It would take quite a bit of work to get the framed harp working again hence my reason for not trying to sell it.

Never mind, worth the cheek and asking.... LOL..

You'll have to do another video with the new one and shows us something to drooooooool over...

  • wow very close to orignal well done guys.

  • @cdbvideo

I also try and get close to the original sound, but also like to make a few changes... I don't do bad seeing as I can't read sheet music to save my life, it's all done by ear... Regards the Harps frame, that doesn't bother me at all, and £150 to build such a special bit of kit is a bargain, so guess who'll be looking in Maplins?... Keep it up, and i look forward to seeign more of your work.. regards, Si.
