CCS: Making It Happen!

Entitled Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Making It Happen! the side event built on the world-wide reputation the University of Regina has developed over the past 20 years as a leader in CCS technology as well as an organization with a track record of success in collaborating with researchers from the private and public sectors around the globe.

The Poznań side-event came within a month of a major announcement at which the Government of Saskatchewan, Royal Dutch Shell and the University of Regina launched a new international centre to help make western Canada a world leader in the worldwide deployment and acceptance of carbon dioxide capture and storage.

The new centre, known as the International Performance Assessment Centre for Geologic Storage of CO2 (IPAC-CO2), was created through founding investments of $5 million each from the Government of Saskatchewan and Royal Dutch Shell.

At the Poznań side-event, Dr. Malcolm Wilson, Director of the Office of Energy and Environment at the University of Regina, moderated discussion and outlined the goals and objectives of IPAC-CO2.

Wilson has served as a member of an expert group under the Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that produced the Special Report on CO2 Capture and Storage. Working Group III was part of the IPCC group of scientists awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize along with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore.
