Artist, activists, Wyllie O Hagan congratulate Irish film maker Brian Deane on his winning Babelgum's inaugural online competition, with his film "Without Words". Spike Lee awarded Brian with the prize in Cannes during the film festival.

Brian Deane's film, "Without Words" urges us to "talk to one another - really talk to one another". The film illustrates the consequence of two young male friends failing to connect with one another. One of the lads dies by his own hand, the other is left to receive news of it.

Brian Deane, a young film-maker, has made a powerful film about suicide within his peer group. The film is made without hysteria, and without judgement. We learn from his example.

In addition to congratulating Brian, Wyllie O Hagan would like to thank Babelgum for their generous hospitality at the Cannes Film Festival. Thanks also to the YouTube Community for supporting our work on the St Patricks Day Film Festival.

Looking forward to the 3rd Annual Wyllie O Hagan St Patricks Day Digital Film Festival in March 2009. It will be online here on YouTube. Subscribe to this channel to keep updated.

Wishing you all the best.

  • You are very generous India2305, thanks very much and all the best to you.

  • What fantastic news for Brian and for u both, WylieO'Hagan, for your innovative Irish film festival. Just wanted to share that you inviting to take part has inspired me to make more work. I have recently shot footage for a film on how people can manage their own woodlands (Ireland has lost most of this knowledge), the short clip attached is me playing with ideas for biodiversity week. Thanks Denise and Claire, you are wonderful and I'm going to post your film on my blog too :D Cathy Fitzgerald

  • Thanks very much Cathy. It is a delight to hear that our work has inspired you to go further with your own. Your short film is just wonderful. Your presence at our London film festival was most welcomed and as we said to Brian - "you are going to Poland". It'll be great. Happy creating:)
