  • I learned a lot in MGTC46 this semester, but the issue of ethics in business stood out the most. Although the developing world presents many opportunities for companies to increase their bottom line, they must remain cognizant of their reputation. Due to the increased amount of scrutiny that companies such as Talisman are faced with, a profitable short-term business venture may not be worth the long-term losses they are bound to face as a result of negative publicity.

  • It is also interesting how technology has allowed us to know more about other cultures and about unethical events by just one click in our computers. After 9/11 not much was known about the Islamic cultures, but today we know more about what their religion and their ethical norms. We see Muslim women been beaten, the long robes they use to cover their bodies, all as part of their ethical norms. Also, we were able to know what was happening in Darfur; a war that was consequence of intolerance.

  • Companies engage in FDI to grow the company worldwide, but I did not know other important reasons for FDI. It was interesting to know that Bridgestone was a Japanese company that bought Firestone in order to enter the American market. Also that the company would use an American as a representative of the company in the U.S. as an example of acquiring local management expertise was a good strategy. I learned how collaborative relationships can be used to expand operations.

  • In addition to the MGTC44 class, this course pointed out the aspect of FDI activities in international business. During class as well as while preparing the assignments, I learned much about what FDI's are, why they are necessary for most companies and which problems might occure. Moreover, we had the chance to discuss controverse topics like globalization or bribing that are strongly connected to investments in some areas of the world.

  • @c46account (ex. post election chaos in Iran: where the government denied any violence against the protestors and people learned the truth by watching the videos that the protestors had recorded using their cell phones of the riot police violently attacking anyone on the streets.)

was how much the advances in the technological environment has helped people learn about the truth and what is actually going on in their countries as opposed to what they've been fed by the local media and the government.

  • It was interesting to realize the importance of knowing different cultures and how one thing may be acceptable in one culture but totally unacceptable in another culture. I also found out that in today's world many large companies do not follow the most ethical standards and their only goal is to make profit. Another interesting point I learned...

  • I learned about Joint ventures and other collaborative relationships, because many times when a canadian company wants to enter a country like China, they have to partner up with a local company in order for the government to approve such a FDI. For example - Manulife Finacial and Sinochem Financial in China
