It conquered Shap, it conquered Ais Gill, but 5043 has now conquered new territory. The Castle once again went up North hauling 'The Red Rose' tour from Tyseley to Blackburn via Crewe, Manchester Victoria and Copy Pit, returning via the West Coast Main Line.

The Castle was originally to go via Stockport but due to some sort of track problem it had to be diverted through Manchester Victoria which meant a notorious climbe up Miles Platting Bank was evident.

Beginning at Miles Platting in Manchester the Castle raises the echoes over the very steep 1 in 47 incline in very fine style, hauling 9 coaches in total. The next spot is the epic Copy Pit located on the West Yorkshire East Lancs border, The Castle easily puts an impressive show up the summit untill she is shut off due to either its leaking steam injector pipe or going abit too over the speed limit. The last scene catches 5043 on the WCML at Chorlton just south of Crewe, the sun had gone when I got there but broke through and shone by the time Edgcumbe can be seen so there wasn't any time to quickly switch to the other side of the line.

I have a personal message for Tyesely on behalve of many Great Western enthusiasts.

You say you want the Castle to challenge more hill climbing. Wanna experience real good hill climbing? Try the South Devon Banks where the Castle technically should be.

  • well you found a great location at copy pit, not seen many from there, nice video, cheers.

  • @noelist was about the only place to find to avoid all the line of people around and get a much better view of the Castle

  • Oh that's superb.( That's better footage than mine at Miles Platting). Very nice filming and panning. What tripod did you use please? As for the Stockport - Denton track problem, trains can only currently go one way (unless the problems now been sorted) as the track is/was broken in such away as to only allow trains through one way (over the points I think), which was the opposite way to which she was coming from.

  • @LMSStanier The tripod I use is a Velbon 7000, they're really good tripods once you've got the hang of them they're very steady and smooth but be carefull with them when in use aswell. 5043 going up Miles Platting certainly beats going through Stockport that for sure

  • Three great shots of the Castle in foreign territory. I was halfway up the footpath at Chorlton. Chris

  • @khankadet Hopefully it wont be long till Tyseley have the guts to get the Castle down into home territory the Devon Banks

  • Came across this just before starting work this morning! Nice way to start work!!! Great shots.... if only those kids had been a few inches taller at MP bank!! Plus, it blows me away just how many people get out there to video steams trains.... which can only be good!

  • A superb video expertly shot, Ryan. Many thanks for sharing it with us. Let's face it the castle was just toying with Copy Pit! The footage at the Chorlton location was very nostalgic for me as I used to live a stone's throw from there. Please keep them coming!

  • Lovely shooting...Bullseye......well done and many thanks.

  • @bristolmidland I don't blame you mate 5043 has a really nice 4-cylinder beat to its double chimney
