This inspiration session for the Veterinary Epidemiology & Public Health, focuses on the recent international outbreaks of Bird Flu and Swine flu and the learning gained from these outbreaks. Prof Dirk Pfeiffer from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London provides this inspiration session.

Would it not be advisable that due to the accumulation of uncertainties in these matters that the model of infectious disease be reviewed and more importance put on the environmental factors that may well be more 'the cause' than the infection itself; the infection being 'the consequence' rather than the cause. The only advantage of the infectious qualification of theses diseases is that it provides a 'culprit' (virus) satisfying organisational needs/ demands but are we not deluding ourselves?
