Speared this spectacle uhu (parrot fish) when he went under a rock at the North Beach on the Marine Base in Kanehoe.
It took me and dive buddy a few tries to pull him out from the hole. With the excitement, and as I brained the uhu, I had forgotten I was filming until dive buddy came over and asked if cam was rolling.

  • Its kind of lame the military can dive/fish those waters and the civilians/locals cannot to be honest.

  • @digipoi - Well, I'm a civilian and I still get to dive there. It's not closed to civilians.

  • Is there a way to dive those waters as a civilian? I know those grounds are awesome.

  • You can go in if only with a military friend.

I've been there twice and don't agree with your notion of the grounds.

I will give it another couple of chances and dive a different part of the base.

  • Congrats. 3:11 and 3:12 is that tako or what is that?

  • Good catch!

It's an ineffective squid lure I bought and strung up, from the fishing store.

I thought it was great idea for attracting fish, but since it is always behind you in tow, I'm not so sure it works, and with a 75 foot tagline its hard to always look back, even when the water is clear enough for 75 foot vis.

  • @FreeDivingHawaii - They give out 200 fishing licenses every quarter or something like but you are designated to the pier and the beach near rifle range. Daytime hours only. I'm also a civilian and ran into DLNR that threatened my job even though I hadn't thrown my pole out yet. This after speaking with another officer prior that said I was good to go. This is confusing, stories need to get straightened out I suppose. Losing my livelihood for fishing the ocean where I grew up is just cold

  • Nope can't get on to north beach unless u know somebody! But, the beach has changed! Not as much fish, shells and the sand has moved alot exposing the reef! Very sad! I usto go watch fish there 10 years ago. Now no more! Gatta let them repopulate again!

  • Congrats on the Uhu and the great video!

  • Nice size uhu. Congrats hope it tasted ono.
