Rohini makes a telling point 'there is too much lateral violence in society'. As we watch a rooftop rainwater harvesting program that seeks to provide rainwater in sump tanks as fluoride free water there are many troubling issues that crop up. The Schetana scheme posits itself that safe water which is fluoride free can come from rainwater collection because the alternatives are duds
- community defluoridation plants don't work
- indiviual defluoridation kits don't work
- piped water supply from surface sources don't work.
In the village Yellampalli we see that
- community defluoridation plant was not working
- individual defluoridation filters had problems of activated alumina replacement being asily available and were not working
- piped water supply came once in a week and was at best full of fluoride
Rainwater harvesting was not working in the school because vandals had broken all pipes and there was no collection of rainwater. The school was a disheartening place to visit. People gathered in the evening hours to drink, gamble and to defectae on the rooftops too. Attempts were made to steal the mid day meal stock and the computers in the school were under threat.
How does a community ull itself from the bootstraps to make things functional? Why have things fallen apart that the community does not give its children a future but steals and vandalises there place of education? That it cannot mobilise itself to solve its drinking ater problem and that there is no goernance worth its name.
