Yes, it was 10% of the Polish population who were gentry, not just 2%. It's strange Norman Davies who is an expert on the Polish history, whose wife is Polish and he himself speaks Polish very well, could have made such a mistake!

For its time, it was astounding and there were ways to be born poor and degenerate yet end up a noble.
Ennoblement was at least, somewhat common and was possible if, for example, exemplary service on behalf of the Commonwealth (the State) was done.
Military victories, scientific achievements and such.
