A real time demo of how to approach animating a basic 3D walk cycle using Maya. This is primarily intended to suggest a methodology for getting all the channels of movement worked out before doing the final polish and mix. (Special thanks goes to Ryan Abonitalla for getting me motivated to do this...Anders Ehrenborg for the modeling and Kustaa Vuori for the rig)

  • Do you know if those commands you write in the value parameter is possible in 3ds max? I can't seem to get it to work. A good and tidy tutorial btw :) Thx

  • @LightOblivion Im not sure...I never use max. Sorry

  • Hello Kyle,

This was a great tutorials. I came across many things which I am not aware of. One of them is the ' values ' that you put in the graph editor to tone down the curve by percentage and the one to reverse the curve. Can you write them down for me.. I was not able to see them in the video.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • @adityapuranik The formulas for scaling/changing timing work like this. In the VALUE/TIME box (on the graph editor/Dope Sheet) you type (1) The function of the operation (2) equals sign (3) a number for the change you want. To scale the curves by 50% (*=.5) or if you want to scale it so that the its 20% bigger (*=1.2) or to totally invert the curve (*=-1) and in the dope sheet, to move all the keys 12 frames later (+=12) in the TIME box. Hope this makes sense.

  • Hi Kyle, thank you for the tutorials. I enjoyed this as much as the mambo one. You are a gift to the community. I can only hope to see more learning videos/books from you!

  • @blurymind Many thanks for the positive feedback, its very encouraging and Im planing more learning materials in the future. Cheers!

  • Great great tutorial! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have a question though. How would you approach a walk moving through the scene instead of in place like this example?
