This is the lengthy build process of the 1/24 scale Aoshima 1982 Toyota Corolla.

Building this car, like the Mazda 323 before it, bought back a LOT of memories for me. Where I am, New Zealand, this car is incredibly common (usually the 1.3 DX versions!) and is a great basis for modifying, whether that be for circuit-racing with, rallying, drifting - or for hotting up as a boyracer car. Back when I was studying, a fair few people I knew had them (particularly the 1982-83 model) and I saw mods from absolute dire, to all out no expense spared.

This model, with its livery (give or take one or two details), pays tribute to a red 1982 Corolla owned by a fellow classmate back in my days as a student at the polytechnic that graced the roads of South Canterbury over 1998-2001 - due to its engine mods, it was one of the fastest cars in town! - Unfortunately, the car's engine blew, the car itself was trashed, and it's smashed up body ended up in the local car dump!

It (the model) was a thoroughly enjoyable car to make, and if I could find another kit of this (these things are like hens teeth in model form!) i'd build it again.

There were a few custom touches I added to this model, notably a rear spoiler, front air intake, sports steering wheel and surplus Mazda RX7 seats - when you build several models, you may often (particularly with AMT and Fujimi kits) end up with many parts left over for use with other cars!

Soundtrack utilized is Alan Parsons Project - "Sirius" (1982) - Chicago Bulls Theme

  • you couldn've spent another 20 bucks and bought a real one?

  • @rjenman lol, 10 years ago here one could have picked up a full-size one of these for $50 (bodies on these were renowned for their rust issues) - now there is few older pre1985 RWD Japanese cars left in NZ, and of those that remain, the values are steadily increasing...

  • So between show car and especially work i still havnt built my model. B4 i do, question for joh2, not sure if theres an english ver. of manual anywhere but could you tell me which steps for sure need glue? +any other tips I may need? Want 2 make sure no regrets. lol, thx :)

  • For this model (and all other Aoshima models I have built) the entire instruction handout was in Japanese, but the exploded view diagrams told me where everything belonged. As for glue, don't use it on parts intended to move (steering, wheels)...

  • did u ever try an edsel?

  • If I find a model of one, I'd build it...

  • hey what do u do with the box after u finish it? i have all 5 of unbuild and all brand new in the box. don't have time for these. is hasegawa 67' toyota 2000gt, arii 82' toyota supra 2.8 liter, tamiya 24062 toyota supra 3.0 gt, fujimi 1989- toyot supra turbo-a, and the original from the first produced 24123 toyota supra by tamiya and only left hand drive only box kit.

  • i like your videos. just take you time on the paint and dont use so much. just barely mist the body. do 2-3 coats of grey primer. then 2-3 of white primer (unless you are painting your car black or grey or drak blue). then do 5-6 mist coats of the main, then do a clear. just take it easy and take your time
