FINALLY, A LITTLE GOOD NEWS OUT OF JAPAN TODAY!

Highly radioactive water leaking into sea stops: TEPCO

Tokyo Electric Power Co. succeeded in stopping highly radioactive water from leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant early Wednesday morning after injecting a chemical agent, it said.

In a bid to stem the leak, the utility, known as TEPCO, injected about 6,000 liters of ''water glass,'' or sodium silicate, and another agent around a seaside pit located near the plant's No. 2 reactor water intake, through which the highly radioactive water had been leaking heavily.

The leak has apparently seriously contaminated the marine environment, as a seawater sample taken near the water intake Saturday showed a radioactive iodine-131 concentration of 7.5 million times the maximum level permitted under law.

As the first case of contamination levels in seafood have exceeded the limit, radioactive cesium over the limit was detected in young launce in the sea near the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture.

The highly radioactive water has been filling up the basement of the No. 2 reactor turbine building and the trench connected to it. The water, believed to have come from the No. 2 reactor core, where fuel rods have partially melted, ended up in the pit.

In order to make room for the storage of the highly contaminated water, TEPCO also continued to dump low-level contaminated water into the sea.

NHK WORLD NEWS VIDEO:
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says radioactive water stopped leaking into the sea from a concrete pit on Wednesday morning.

Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to check if there are any new leaks.

TEPCO says it confirmed that the water flow stopped at 5:38 AM.

On Tuesday, workers drilled a hole to reach the gravel below the pit and poured 1,500 liters of a hardening agent called liquid glass. TEPCO says this has stopped the flow. The company released a photo which shows that water is no longer flowing into the ocean.

On Saturday, the company spotted water contaminated with high-level radioactive substances leaking from a crack in the pit of the Number 2 reactor. TEPCO said the contaminated water was flowing from a damaged pipe onto the gravel, then into the pit and finally out to sea.

The company had tried a variety of measures to stop the water flow.

The latest move comes as the company continues to release low-level radioactive water from the plant into the sea. The discharge started on Monday to free storage space for higher-level radioactive water. As of 11 PM on Tuesday, 5,600 tons had been expelled into the ocean.

TEPCO has been trying to contain radioactive dust by spraying synthetic resin around the reactors. The company says it will continue this successful operation.

  • @masterofmanythings ... I know this isn't like the worst is over. I don't even think we've seen the worst yet. But, just maybe this is the start of some progress. Guess I'll always be an optimist.

  • Gosh, please, no more ocean crap.. I'm still worried about the dam bp oil... ;( People should stop putting stuff right next to the damn ocean, or at least stop taking shit out of the ocean.. like oil.. -.- let's start with a lot of electric cars now..

  • once the drain stops it will never start again because they will be able to shut the reactor down ......

  • They have no Idea how to stop this crazy train .They are going up the rail's for sure.serves them right .This is a worning to the rest of the world get it right or this will be you...

  • thanx BP you did it again , another leak well fixed , musta filled it up with all the oil spilled , no , maybe they are lieing ,ya i say' liers' i say , bet its still leaking just not as bad , next i say we build a nuke plant on top of the new trade tower when done , well out of the way , couldnt anything happen , YOU THINK and no bp had nothing to do with this , ,,, just maken fun

  • BTW - Thanx for posting. I've subbed your channel & will share under Fair Use if OK with you. LMK, OK?

    Take care,

  • Hi. While this seems to be good news, given the propensity to not provide true & full disclosure seems to be the norm with large corporations (immediately "BP" comes to mind) one cannot help but wonder whether or not TEPCO & the Japanese Govt are telling the truth, the WHOLE truth AND nothing BUT the truth. We, the people of the planet have become numb to staggering numbers and catastrophes that should not have taken place in the first place. There should be accountability in BOTH/ALL instances.

  • does it matter then they allready want or have pured like tons of tons of very radioactive water out in the sea

  • Calling BS on This...Just wait!
