Actually it's not really this dark to the human eye, the train headlamps do give quite a lot of light up front. In my teenage years, my mates and I just opened up the driver cab door and said can we ride up front, he had no problems! But we were told to duck at the stations!

My mum was a motorman (train-driver) on the Central line from late 1980's (later went to the District Line) - during when the no. of women drivers remained in single figures. She rarely spoke of it but it took years for her to be fully accepted and only then because her ability and record were exemplary. I too applied to LT (all our family worked on the trains) but failed the eyesight standard.
I rode in the cab with Mum just once. I so wanted to announce "Your Driver today is: My Mum!"
