Roast fresh chestnuts in the oven and add to your holiday dishes.

Roasting Chestnuts
To roast chestnuts, first preheat the oven to 350°.
Using a small, sharp knife, cut an "X" through the shell on the flat side of each nut. Place the nuts in a shallow pan, and roast 25 to 30 minutes or until the skins open where the Xs are, and the nuts are tender inside. At 25 minutes, open one to check and see if it's tender. When the nuts are just cool enough to handle, squeeze them in a kitchen towel to loosen the shells. Then peel away the shell and the tough inner linings.

  • I cannot wait for my pure american chestnuts to get big enough. They are 4 years old now and should be starting to produce anytime!!

  • Roasted chestnuts are losing popularity in the USA. It is even difficult to find them for sale now days. A real shame because they are delicious!

  • i have horse chestnuts

    too poisonous to eat :(

  • Also, forgot, you don't have to put the slash on the flat side, anywhere will do, however, I prefer to slash the rounded side for ease and safety reasons since you are in more control of the chestnut if you put the flat side to the counter, you won't have to get the knife so close to your hands. I also use a serrated knife for that part. A dishtowel on the counter under them helps keep them from sliding around while you cut the shell. Hope this is helpful!

  • Horrible, terrible method here. 1- you don't have to cut an X, just a slash to let steam escape, the X is unnecessary and dangerous at times. 2- most definitely soak or simmer in water before roasting, makes them easier to shell, more moist and creamy. 3- I have no idea why she crunches them at the end. If you boil/soak them first the shell and papery skin will slide right off easily and you will have a whole chestnut instead of pieces. Def don't follow this video.
