Sutherland was in the film because the studio thought that they needed a second "name" as a draw, Belushi was already famous from Saturday Night Live. Sutherland was offered $35K to 15%, and turned it down for $50K. He would have made over $20M if he'd accepted the deal. Animal House was made for next to nothing ($2.7M) and made over $140M... amazing!

Sutherland only has three scenes in the movie. The first is when he is delivering a lecture in English class (this lasts about five minutes), the second is when he is smoking pot with some of his students at his home (this is his longest scene, about ten to fifteen minutes) and the third is a very brief (one minute) scene in which Schoenstein discovers that his girl friend Katy is sleeping with the professor (played by Sutherland). In actuality, Sutherland's role was unnecessary.

Faber is actually based on Dartmouth College, the most rural of the Ivy League schools and naturally the one with the craziest fraternity scene. Emily Dickinson College (the all women's school where the Deltas go to find dates) is based on Mount Holyoke College (note that Emily Dickinson graduated from Mount Holyoke). I always regretted the fact that none of the TV shows inspired by this film did well, and that all attempts at movie sequels never came to fruition.
