We've hooked our Acer Aspire One netbook up to an external monitor via the VGA port, effectively using the Aspire One like one would use a desktop tower. The setup works quite well; after you've switched it over to the monitor mode (as detailed in the video), it stays in that setup until it no longer detects the VGA cable on startup. In a subsequent video (entitled "Aspire One external monitor setup"), I'll go into detail about how you can initially input the settings, so that the graphics options menu is the only one you need to use to switch it from notebook monitor to external monitor.
