According to multiple sources, the University of Illinois is set to hire Toledo head football coach Tim Beckman as their next head coach.
Beckman cancelled a Thursday press conference in order to attend the funeral of his friend, and former colleague at Ohio State, Joe Daniels. When asked if there was any truth to the rumors of his departure, Beckman declined to comment.
Illinois fired head coach Ron Zook after finishing the season with six straight losses.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Beckman met with his staff and UT officials early Thursday and a press conference to introduce Beckman as the new Illini coach is reportedly scheduled for Friday. Illinois is willing to pay Beckman $2 million, which would mark a sizable increase from his salary of roughly $400,000 with the Rockets.
Beckman has a 21-16 record with Toledo, including an appearance in last year's Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl. He previously worked under Jim Tressel at Ohio State and Urban Meyer at Bowling Green. Beckman's other stops include, Auburn, Western Carolina, Elon and Oklahoma State.
UT is preparing to play Air Force in the Military Bowl on December 28th in Washington D.C.
