Nivea, hem öncülleri olan sadece yağ içerikli parfümlerden çok daha hafif ve kolay emiliyor, hem de kendine özel bir parfümü var. Cildi nemlendiriyor, dış etkilere karşı koruyor, bir de üstüne üstlük cildin rengini açtığı söyleniyor. İnsan psikolojisi işte, açık tenliler esmer olmak ister, koyu tenliler ise beyazlaşmak... Almanya ve Polonyanın bulunduğu coğrafyayı düşünürsek, bir yandan ari bir beyazlık, bir yandan da sami bir esmerlik görülüyor bölgede ve kontrol eden grup beyazlar olduğu için, beyaz olmak üstün olmak şeklinde algılanıyor. Bu renk açma temasını daha ileriki yıllarda da -açık veya kapalı olarak- Nivea tanıtımlarda görmeye devam ediyoruz.
Yukarıdaki film, 1920'lerde İspanya'da sinemalarda reklam filmi olarak kullanılmış bir Nivea tanıtımı. Çizgi filmin kahramanı olan esmer hanımın beyazlanma çabasına lütfen dikkat edin. ENGLISH: Troplowitz, the second owner of the Beiersdorf Co., used the "eucerit" developed by Unna and Lifschutz as an emulcifier in combining the water and oil in a cream. The result was a light cream with a snow white colour and it was named as "Nivea", a word derived from the latin word "niveum" which meant "snow". This new watery cream was light (unlike its predecessors, the fat or oil based heavier creams), nutrifiying, easily absorbed and protected the skin from the climate effects. On top of that, it had a distinctive perfume which was quite nice smelling and was also said to whiten the colour of the skin. Human psychology this is and we want to be what we are not; light coloured skins want to get bronzer and dark colour skins want to get as light as possible... Thinking that the geographic area at the time this cream was born, Germany and Poland, was witnessing a clash of skin colours, the aryan white and the semite dark, it is not difficult to guess that the dark skinned ladies wanted to get whiter more because the ruling ethnicity was the white ones. We continue to see this "whitening" theme also in later advertisements of the Nivea brand.
This commercial clip from 1920's was used as an advertisement in Spain, in the cinema halls. Please watch the heroine of this clip, the naturally dark tanned lady trying her best to get lighter. When the desired effect of the cream is achieved, the lady is more confident and is happy to welcome the arrows of Eros circulating around herself.
