These are a colony on display at the Cincinnati Zoo insect exhibit, which is an excellent place to study insects.

I did see these in the wild while working in the rainforest in Latin American. I gave them a wide berth as they can really sting!!!

@erlcly02 If you have been stung many times, It was not a bullet ant. More likely a fire ant or something. These ones are named bullet ant for the rumor of being the same pain as being shot. a small kid most likely would probaly even died.

LOL, i remember this kind of ants. i used to play with it. i got stung many times but i learned which part to avoid to not get sting.

when i was a kid one of the kids from my neighbor showed me how make them fight. i thought it was really cruel and cool at the same time.. =(

@archietas Yeah, I was disappointed that the ants weren't doing something more interesting like hunting or walking on a pen to show their relative length. Nice to toss in a few fire ants and see what happens. Maybe an earthworm, frog, marshmallow, or Regis Philbin. No, just kidding about the marshmallow.
