This video was produced by the Veterinary News Network (VNN) and explains how adopting your next dog does not mean mutt (not that there is anything wrong with that). You can find a purebred dog from many wonderful purebred dog breed rescues. DogExplorer.com is an affiliate of VNN and is authorized to upload this video.

  • I've been looking and looking at shelters, twice a week actually and all over the county, and had no luck finding a small-breed long-coated dog. It seems that the "breed rescues" get notified before the public does about any new arrivals and the scoop them up and want to re-adopt them out for a higher fee. Plus, the breed rescues want a very detailed, nee invasive, application and act like well-meaning pet owners like me are on a trial to get one of their dogs. Why the red tape?

  • First, good for you for trying to adopt from a shelter or rescue. Next, we speak only for ourselves, not any rescue or shelter. It does make sense to us that Breed Rescues track purebred dogs as that helps people looking for a specific breed find and adopt those dogs. All responsible rescues need detailed applications to ensure the dogs are going to safe homes. However, we agree, some seem worse than taxes, home loans or the SATs. ;) Good luck - don't forget those fees put food in the bowls!

  • Speaking from a national breed rescue we don't always get the phone calls, we have to have volunteers go and search the shelters. applicants don't see the countless miles in the car and in planes , the vet bills, the foster home checks, the phone bills, the application checks and home checks. You have to remeber we are here for the dogs. Our goal is to find the best home for the dog. I work with a toy rescue so fences, supervision, lifestyle have to be looked at before a adoption can happen.

  • thanks for posting this. Spread the word

  • Offer to make a donation if they are willing to cut through the crap. Like $200 plus all the inflated doggie wrap things, like the checkup, needless shots, registration, and whatever else bs fluff they add on.
