I'd like to record my music with better quality than just Audacity recording. Would this be good for beginners? I have only one synth and I think it's possible to connect it to a mixer like this.

The different between USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 is very marginal.

Don´t worry. The M-16DX works 100% stable using Cubase SX3 simultaneously recording 16 audio tracks. 0% USB issues here. Depends mostly on the computer´s chipset.
I recommend to create a explicit partition for the use of an operating system which is dedicated 100% to audio recording, processing and so on.
