In these scenarios I'm always missing what will happen to all the no longer maintained nuclear power plants and nuclear waste sites. I guess there would be major radioactive contaminations for many many thousands of years.

well that's true. but what if they had a different kind of technology. they were intelligent but also their body is equipped with enough organic tools they didn't need our kind of technology. how probable do you think they used non durable biological technology rather than mechanical.

I guess the key is quality of life. Everyone who doesn't have it want to get it, and those who already have it want to keep the status quo.
Also in a highly competitive environment where the resources are scarce, everyone wants to get their piece.
Of course that multiple actors operating in their self-interest do harm to the overall public good, that it is not really a secret.
The canonical case is Poverty and Addiction, is ironically the most unscrupulously exploited profitable formula.
