Google Sketchup

I am a Self Builder. 2D CAD plans are great for seeing Layout, but I found Google Sketchup (free) was great to create a full 3D model of my extension. This really helped me, my wife, neighbours and planners visualise space and see how my design would look in the real world. Once you've made your model, you can upload it to Google Earth then create daylight predictions to actually see how sun and shadows will fall on your new build. I created a series of training videos aimed at the Self Builder, not the Computer guru.
