In September 2009, a group of five volunteers along with their host mum, began a project initiative in a slum on the outskirts of Naivasha, Kenya.
The slum, known as the KCC has been in existence since 1972 and up to recently had received minimal aid for development or relief.
Starting by meeting local families and leaders, the journey to build relationships with the local people was born. Meeting with families in their shacks to talk and ask questions about their challenges.
Within these talks we discussed family issues, unemployment, health, food and lack of basic primary education. From these discussions a picture of the true needs facing the people became the foundation for a new vision of hope and possibility.
The feeding program is a simple meal called Uji. Its a Kenyan style porridge which is full of nutrients, fibre and vitamins. Using five different flours mixed in 90kg sacks, each day we cook 4kg of this along with 2kg of sugar. Its all mixed in a 100 litre pot over an open fire. The program is run for around 120 of the most needy children from the slum, from homes where food is rarely available. The future plans are extend this into other meals and food such as veges, fruit, ugali (A Kenyan Staple) and much more\\
