THE PLASTIC PLAGUE -some facts....

About four-fifths of marine trash comes from land, swept by wind or washed by rain off highways and city streets, down streams and rivers, and out to sea. Nearly 90% of floating marine litter is plastic.

- In June 2006 United Nations Environmental Program report estimated that there are an average of 46,000 pieces of plastic debris floating on or near the surface of every square mile of ocean.

  • Its time to make a serious change.

  • It's so sad what has happened to the oceans because of us humans. Thank you for posting this for everyone to learn from. I saw this when it aired on Animal Planet and wish that BBC would make it available for sale so it can be shown in classrooms around the world. I added it to my playlists, but could only find bits of it. Do you have the whole show available?

Thanks so much for all you do to make a difference in this world we all live in.

One person can make a difference. You ROCK!

    Peace

  • The ugly truth, which many seem to not want to face. Thank you so much for posting it. I'll be sharing it with family and friends.

  • a few more facts:

Plastic takes from 400 to 1 million years to disintegrate.

All plastic migrates toxins into whatever it touches.

Our seas now hold more plastic than plankton.

A 3-million-ton mass of plastic trash swirls in a gigantic eddy in the North Pacific Ocean.

    It is bigger than Texas.

Over one million seabirds and over 100,000 sea mammals die each year from eating or being trapped in plastic trash.

  • Thanks for posting this - and thanks to Pennilesscripple for the link!
