Second Street Memories
(C. Davis)
They came from all around, from the Kentucky line on down
Movin' up to Dayton where there was more work to be found
Everyone on 2nd Street had came from a different scene
Just 9 - 5'rs chasin' dreams
Daddy worked the factory doin' everything he could
to get the most out of life in a crowded neighborhood
Moma worked for Hewitt's, an old soap company
And life was as good as it could be
And they say the old place ain't what it used to be
But I'll always have my 2nd street memories
Right there in that alley, my brother parked the ice cream truck
that he wasn't old enough to drive, but he got the job by luck
It was Sno Cones for my sister, save the Push Up's all for me
Most things taste better when they're free
And hey, there goes Grady ridin' that three wheel bike down the road
He hooked it up with a basket and CB Radio
And here comes that redhead and her two albino boys
They're gonna trade us a hamster for some toys
And they say the old place ain't what it used to be
But I'll always have my 2nd street memories
That drunk down on the corner, he used to speak out for the lord
But they took his cloth away and he don't do that anymore
While we run wild chasin' lightning bugs he sits up on that porch
says 'one of those tornados is bound to get us for sure'
Over at that bus stop, my brother met us after school
Said that there'd been an accident and things weren't lookin' good
And right there in that living room grandma sat me on her lap
and said 'your father's not comin' back'
They say the old place ain't what it used to be
I guess I'm not much inclined to disagree
But they can't take away my 2nd street memories
Your songwriting has always amazed me. This is one of your best ever!
