Second part of the English Heritage film of the 2006 reenactment of the Battle of Hasting. 3000 reenactors take to the field in this action packed live event.
The roundshield was standard at the start of the Viking period round about 900ad. However towards the end of the Viking period the Kite shield became the standard. It is likely that both the Saxons and the Normans would have used these extensively with roundshields being present only in small numbers among the poorer Saxons.
Thr round shield was for the shield wall as the kite shaped shield was for cavalry, which would suggest they were predominatly used by the normans! The people who made the tapestry were not soldiers and this detail may have been a mistake or perhaps an attempt by those who comissioned it to eradicate an aspect of Saxon martial identity!
Amazing, also the Normans were descendants of Vikings and Norsemen, from the time of Hrolf called rollon

You might ask why we associate the kite shield with Normans? :)
The Bayeux Tapestry shows almost everyone using kites. The round shields are seen but they are rare, maybe for specialized troops.

I would like to know why did the saxons have kite sheilds when we associate the kite sheild with the normans?
