"The mounting economic hardships throughout Southern Wisconsin from mass layoffs to growing insecurity have been downright gut-wrenching. Families are finding it more difficult to make ends meet while they watch their savings evaporate.
"By throwing trillions of dollars of borrowed money at the problem, Congress and the Administration's recent spending bills have taken us in the wrong direction. The President's budget provides even greater fiscal and economic recklessness - with massive tax hikes on all Americans in the midst of a recession, and an explosion of new spending doubling the debt within a decade.
"Sustained economic growth cannot come from Washington; but rather from the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the American people. Fast-acting fiscal policies should focus on boosting incentives for expanding business operations and creating good-paying jobs.
"The most critical step in getting America back on the road to recovery is fixing our banking system to get credit flowing, businesses hiring, and our economy growing.
"Congress must also come to terms with our looming entitlement crisis and implosion of our critical social insurance programs. Every year we fail to act, we dig ourselves deeper into debt, sowing the seeds for our next crisis. I've put forth a comprehensive reform proposal - A Roadmap for America's Future - that lifts this crushing burden of debt, fulfills the mission of health and retirement security, and strengthens Americans jobs and competitiveness for the 21st century.
"I hope Washington can come together in a bipartisan fashion to address these challenges. We cannot borrow, spend, and tax our way of this crisis; we need to promote sustained economic growth and we need to act now.
