Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin., which means it is dissolved in fat and is stored in body fat. Foods that contain vitamin A will not lose the vitamin when cooked. Vitamin A is often referred to as retinol because it produces the pigments in the eyes' retina.

Some functions of vitamin A are:

--Vitamin A helps to maintain healthy teeth, skin, skeletal and soft tissue, and mucus membranes.

--It promotes good vision, especially in low light.

--Vitamin A is important for reproduction, bone growth, cell division, and cell differentiation. Cell differentiation is when a cell has a specialized function, such as brain cell, muscle cell, blood cells, etc.

--Vitamin A helps regulate the immune system, which helps prevent or fight off infections by making white blood cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses.

A vitamin A deficiency can result in infectious diseases and vision problems. However, excessive vitamin A can result in sickness or even birth defects.
You can get vitamin A from animal sources such as eggs, meat, cheese, cream, liver, and cod.

Or you can get vitamin A from fruits such as as cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, apricots. Or vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squash, broccoli, spinach, and most dark green, leafy vegetables.
When you get vitamin A from animal sources, you also get saturated fat and cholesterol. So, it might be healthier to get your vitamin A from plant sources.

  • lol this is how you get science talk into dumb jocks lololol But since beta keratin/ vitamin A are fat soluble, you should have better uptake if you included fat with your plant sources.

  • I live a stone's throw from Bastyr University here north of Seattle. I have to say that in the last five years I have opened my eyes to natural medicine, complementary therapy and naturopathic treatments. I haven't needed any treatment personally, but do believe there needs to be A BALANCE between health foods, non-traditional treatments and the bulk of pure false or overinflated information out there regarding cures and/or the critique of all traditional Western medicine.

  • Great upload! Thank you for sharing. Vitamin A has SO many health benefits. Isn't it amazing what simple changes in diet and daily vitamins can make in your overall health?
