My tribute to Keith Moon, been drumming since 1971, this is the studio version, never seen a clip of him playing as recorded, this was one take, but I've been playing the Who since '71 so it should be one take, 905Alive is taken from the Who Are You song 905 by The Ox. Moon played a lot of ostinato's and if you look into his influences-early jazz, Krupa, Beach boys, etc you can get a better feel for where he was coming from. He also used a lot of flams and others tricks off his bass drums, watch the Isle of Wight concert carefully. Like Keith, I have a lot of energy and frustration and take them out on my drums(pity them).

  • 905 I got a question how exactly do you work your 2 bass drums hitting them together or alternating between the two like a RLRL or more like RRLLRRLL ir anything like that?

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe , if you are just starting out with double bass rule 1 is less is more, becareful what you add because it can make you out of time, ride a bike and do situps, you need to be balanced so that neither leg is holding your weight, basically if I am using it like a tom like Keith I may lead with the left because I have already started with my right arm, if I am using it as a beat I lead with the right, for accents I use the left to compliment the snare, more below

  • so I can ride the cymbals and roll off the snare like in this song but add the lbd just before the right or the toms too, so you would roll either down the toms or snare and traditionally snap the bd at the end but instead roll-lbdrbd for a shhhhbada-boom effect, there really is no end to the combos as long as you stay in time, Keith proved that, he broke the mold for double bass drumming, but, so did Carmine Appice and I suspect Keith was influenced by him because...

  • .. Keiths drumming changed when Carmine came out, but so did Ginger Baker, check out a band called Cactus and the drumming by Carmine, its killer, all kinds of double bass combos and uses are exampled, they only did a few albums in the early 70's but were considered an early supergroup after Cream, I suspect all of those drummers influenced eachother.

  • Nice job

btw i was looking at The Who drum covers on youtube and I notice that more than 95% of these people leave out the signature Moon bass flams especially on Baba so its nice to see someone who can play the tunes with the right feel.

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe ----thanks, I caught it on the Isle of Wight video, Keith never used his left bass drum like other drummers, he used it like another tom

  • @RockBanned --yeah, I could hear pete saying: " who was that crazy bloke who we pulled out of the crowd when Keith ate the handful of horse tranquilizers??, did anyone get his bloody name???....BULLOCKS!!!"

  • @RockBanned --thanks, I have thought of that night and a similar situation with Blue Oyster Cult, but I was born American and the Who are strictly a British band.

I sent Pete a tape at Eel pie after Moon died, just because I needed to tell myself I tried, I then saw him on tv saying he recieved many tapes and that no one should try to play like Moon--a major mistake in my opinion because he was 1/4 of their sound.

  • I bet you wish it was you who got called up to the stage that time to replace Moonie huh? Well you might not have been good enough at that point, but pretend you were at the skill you were at now and started playing almost as good as him lol. You coulda had a great gig after Keith Moon died!

  • any band on any given night will vary, they did a medley they never did and may not have practiced much if at all, I'd guess they were running a click track to keep all the songs in time and it stole their thunder
