The WCO isnt dying, its evolving. Different WCO coaches have their prefered attacks. The only thing that makes it a WCO, is when the QBs feet is tied to the timing of the WRs route. Nobody use the true WCO style anymore because of the effectiveness of a zone blitz against 5 step and 7 step timing routes. When the Packers played against the Steelers in the SB, they neutralized their zone blitz by using a spread type WCO attack with multiple Wr sets with 3 step timing routes. The WCO still lives..
A few years back the university of Nebraska hired Bill Calahan who brought along with him , the west coast offense. The novelty soon wore off and was replaced by the feeling that " holy cow...this is the most inconsistent offense we've ever had " . The frustration of losing and playing poorly out weighed whatever entertainment value it brought. Bill , his superbowl ring and the WCO were sent packing. Consistency wins championships and in the absence of Montana+Rice +49er talent, it fails
