Near Drowning, Kauai, Aupuni Hawaii, January 21, 2007

A man named Cody nearly drowned today at Larson's Beach on the island of Kauai, Aupuni Hawaii. He was snorkling in the shallows in the protected inner reef area when he was carried out to the crashing surf. He called for help to his friend Dr. Bob Wotring of Kauai Clinic. Dr. Bob went to Cody's rescue but was unable to bring Cody in out of the danger zone of pounding surf and reef edge due to the strong current and waves. Eventually a fisherman named Malani came to the rescue and he too tried to help, and managed to keep Cody's head above water but could not bring Cody in. Eventually Darrel Jarmusch of Kilauea came to the rescue using a borrowed snorkel and mask, but Darrel and Malani working together could not swim in with Cody and eventually he slipped from their grasp. Darrel was able to grab Cody once again and attempted a rescue but nearly drowned himself in the attempt after his borrowed snorkel became clogged. By this time Dr. Wotring was swiming near Cody and urged him to remain calm and assured him he would be ok. Darrel and Malani swam in to shore to get help and they gathered three boogie boards, some rope and a better snorkel. Then Darrel swam back out through the surf on a boogie board with two other boggie boards in tow. As Darrel reached Cody and Dr. Wotring a Kauai Fire and Rescue waterman on a jetski came riding over the waves to the great relief of Cody, Darrel, Dr. Wotring and observers on shore. Eventually a Coast Guard vessel from Nawiliwili showed up. All three men boarded the Coast Guard Vessel and were then ferried in one by one to the shore by the Kauai Fire and Rescue waterman on the back of the jetski.
