An effort to reduce youth drownings, The "Kids Don't Float" program provides life jackets for those who forgot their child's life jacket at home or have an extra child along on a trip. In the program's second year in Minnesota, boaters donated 10 lifejackets to the honor-system borrowing stations. Mnsun.com editor Greg Huff and Sun intern MacKenzie Collins filed this report.

Veach named OHS distinguished alumni
Orono Board of Education member Jack Veach has been named the 2009 Orono High School Distinguished Alumni award winner.

Veach, a 1977 OSH grad, has served on the board since 1994 and has also served on the board of directors for State Bank of Delano and Maple Plain Community Church as well as coaching numerous youth sports teams over the years.

Veach received his award, which comes with a personalized collector's rocking chair, during the school's annual awards night, which was held May 12.

"The honor of that evening really goes back to the kids," Veach said. "The real legacy is seeing the kids up there receiving scholarships.

"You think, 'maybe some of those kids will be back in 15 years doing the same thing you are'... hopefully some of them will step forward and help continue the legacy of the district."

A full story on Veach's award will be featured in the June 4 edition of the Sun-Sailor.
