This was my first Cob project, which I learned from books, web, talking with others and from just doing it!
The clay is from the surrounding area and is generally pure enough without needing to be filtered.
The sand is from a local river bed. Normally I would use sharp sand, but there was enough 'bite' to make it usable.
The fibre is Vettiver. This was added to the mix as short-chopped pieces (5 to 10 cm) and also as full-length fibres (up to 1 metre long) added during the building process.
'Dry' mix proportions for the cob:
Sand 80%
Clay 10%
Fibre 10%
These proportions varied with the different layers, but always mainly sand.

Haha! When did you do that?

  • the oven is beautiful! and the film was fantastic!

i have a finca in quepos and i want to do some cob construction there. i think you guys are in the area, no?

  • @vegematic

Hi, I'm no longer at Finca Ipe - I left over 5 years ago! I'd love to come and help out but it's a bit of a long way...

  • The base is filled with rock, stone, sand and the waste from refining the clay. The final layer is cob mixture with fire bricks embedded to create the floor of the oven. Then the dome goes on.

Have fun! Make an animation of it!!

  • Muy interesante e ingeniso los felicito tanto por el horno como por video.me gustaria ver como quedo despues de cocinar algo en el
