Nah, man, if you check the Shovelglove webpage, you'll see he's been doing this for years, 14 minutes a day,5 days a week. He's not looking to be a competitive athlete, just to improve the quality of his life. I think if more people were like Reinhard, this country would be a lot healthier and fitter.

I think it would probably use more muscle to actually stop the hammer before it hits something...? (I'm not an expert)

There is a large old tree stump in my backyard, and I use that rather than a tire, though I like that idea too. The stump makes a cool (THWAK) noise when I hit it though. :)

I'm 215lbs., in pretty good shape, and a 16lb. sledge even kicks MY butt. It is a very good workout.

I do this exercise, difference is that I actually slam it against an old truck tire. This is a good exercise video but would even be better if you finish the swing against a tire.
Also ,forgot to remember how much stress can be released with a sledgehammer!

20 pounds is a ton, I just started today with a 16 and it's kicking my butt! I may return it and get a 10.
How much does it weigh and what is a good starting weight?
I tried using a snadbag but they are too messy.

The hammer in the video is pretty massive (20 pounds). I started with 12 pounds. I'd probably recommend less, depending on what kind of shape you are to begin with. It's much harder than you'd think -- the leverage really makes a difference.

You should chop actual wood. It's much more fun =D

I agree! The problem is I haven't figured out a way (or reason) to actually chop wood in my urban apartment.
