That's not why the shuttle is being retired. The shuttle is being retired because the budget would not allow for them to keep the shuttle and proceed with Constellation, and they want Constellation so we can go to the moon (again) and Mars.
Bullshit! Soviet space program in late 1950s and early 1960 was not relied on antique german V-2 design from 1940s. V-2 was not even in "space rockets" class - it had short range and puny thrust! Soviet chief-designer Korolev used their-own design for his R-7(first soviet space rocket) and Soviet-designed rocket engines. Actually, most of nazi rocket developments, most of important german specialist and ex-nazi rocket chief-designer Verner von Braun was captured by USA, not by Soviets...
